An Observational Upper Limit on the Rate of Gamma-Ray Bursts with Neutron Star–Black Hole Merger Progenitors

چکیده
Abstract Compact-object binary mergers consisting of one neutron star and black hole (NSBHs) have long been considered promising progenitors for gamma-ray bursts, whose central engine remains poorly understood. Using gravitational-wave constraints on the population-level NSBH mass spin distributions we find that at most 20 Gpc −3 yr −1 bursts in local universe can progenitors.

Binary Merger Progenitors for Gamma-ray Bursts and Hypernovae
The collapsar model, the now leading model for the engine behind gamma-ray bursts and hypernovae, requires that a star collapses to form a black hole surrounded by an accretion disk of high-angular momentum material. The current best theoretical stellar models, however, do not retain enough angular momentum in the core of the star to make a centrifugally supported disk. In this paper, we presen...
متن کاملProgenitors of Long Gamma-ray Bursts
Pinpointing the progenitors of long duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) remains an extremely important question, although it is now clear that at least a fraction of LGRBs originate in the core collapse of massive stars in type Ic supernovae, the pathways to the production of these stars, and their initial masses, remain uncertain. Rotation is thought to be vital in the creation of LGRBs, and it ...
متن کاملThe Surroundings of Gamma-Ray Bursts: Constraints on Progenitors
The association of a supernova with a gamma-ray burst (GRB 030329) implies a massive star progenitor, which is expected to have an environment formed by pre-burst stellar winds. Although some sources are consistent with the expected wind environment, many are not, being better fit by a uniform density environment. One possibility is that this is a shocked wind, close to the burst because of a h...
متن کاملOn the viability of neutron star black hole binaries as central engines of gamma-ray bursts
I discuss three-dimensional SPH simulations of neutron star black hole (BH) encounters. The calculations are performed using a nuclear equation of state and a multi-flavor neutrino treatment, general relativistic effects are mimicked using the Paczynski-Wiita pseudo-potential and gravitational radiation reaction forces. Most of the explored mass range (14 to 20 M⊙) has not been considered befor...
متن کاملThe Merger of a Helium Star and a Black Hole: Gamma-ray Bursts
There is growing observational evidence that gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are powered by black holes accreting rapidly through a disk. The supernova-like outburst that accompanies some gamma-ray bursts suggest that some long-duration GRBs may be driven by the accretion of a rotating stellar core onto a central black hole. Such a system can be produced when a compact remnant spirals into the core of ...
